The law on multiple citizenship will allow foreign legion soldiers, ethnic Ukrainians, and members of the diaspora to obtain Ukrainian citizenship. At the same time, Ukrainian refugees will be able to acquire foreign citizenship.
This was stated by Ruslan Horbenko, Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, in a comment to Ukrinform.
“Passing the law on multiple citizenship — the ability to hold two or more passports — is an extremely important step for millions of Ukrainians. This especially concerns those who were forced to leave the country because of the war. Today, around six million of our citizens are abroad. This law is meant for them,” Horbenko said.
According to him, many Ukrainians have already obtained residence permits in other countries, and some have even received foreign passports. Some have children born abroad who may be eligible for citizenship by birth.
“The law allows such individuals to obtain the citizenship of the country that gave them shelter, while retaining Ukrainian citizenship, in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine,” the MP explained.
At the same time, he pointed out another key group targeted by the law — foreigners who are fighting for Ukraine.
“Among them are stateless persons or citizens of other countries. They are risking their lives for our freedom, and therefore deserve the right to Ukrainian citizenship, as do their relatives,” emphasized Horbenko.
Another important group affected by the law is the Ukrainian diaspora. Ukrainians born and raised abroad with other citizenships will be able not only to identify as Ukrainians by nationality, but also to legally become citizens of Ukraine.
“As the President emphasized, there are more than 60 million Ukrainians around the world. Preserving Ukrainian identity abroad is extremely important. Now our compatriots abroad will also be able to obtain Ukrainian citizenship without having to renounce their existing citizenship,” he added.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in the second reading the law aimed at ensuring the right to acquire and retain Ukrainian citizenship.
