Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán claims that according to the results of the Voks-2025 “national consultations” conducted by the country’s government, 95% of Hungarians allegedly opposed Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
This was reported by Hungary Today, according to Ukrinform.
According to Orbán, 2,284,732 people took part in the “consultations,” of whom 2,168,431 were allegedly against Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
The Hungarian prime minister, who arrived in Brussels for the EU summit, said: “My voice has become stronger and more courageous, and I will say at the negotiations on behalf of more than two million Hungarians that Hungary does not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.”
However, according to Bloomberg, critics have questioned the credibility of these “consultations.” They pointed out that Hungarians could vote online by providing only their name, age, and email address, which potentially allowed the same person to vote multiple times.
Although “national consultations” are not mandatory, Orbán has long used polls as a political tool that shows results consistent with his policies. Previous polls have covered a variety of topics, from migration to LGBTQ rights.
This result also differs from a representative Median poll in March, which showed that only 56% of Hungarians oppose Ukraine’s possible accession to the EU. The opposition party Tisza conducted its own poll earlier this year, in which the overwhelming majority of Hungarians expressed support for Ukraine’s application.
The media outlet notes that the result of Orbán’s “poll” was the result of a months-long information campaign to discredit Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, including on billboards placed throughout Hungary. Orbán tried to use the “Ukrainian issue” to divert attention from the rising cost of living and allegations of widespread corruption among the ruling elite.
As reported by Ukrinform, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in March that he would conduct a survey (so-called national consultations) among Hungarians regarding their support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. It lasted from April 14 to June 20.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that the so-called Voks-2025 national consultations held in Hungary on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union had a manipulative purpose that had nothing to do with the principles of democracy, openness, and transparency of the expression of will.
