Ukraine is actively seeking to engage American companies in humanitarian demining operations across territories contaminated by explosive ordnance as a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
According to Ukrinform, this initiative was announced by Ivan Sopiha, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, during a meeting with representatives of U.S. businesses experienced in mine action across Asia and Africa.
“Historically, most countries began demining only after hostilities had ceased. But Ukraine started clearing explosive-contaminated land during an ongoing full-scale war,” Sopiha noted.
He emphasized that these efforts are essential for restoring life in liberated regions.
To accelerate the process, Ukraine aims to attract experienced international mine action operators, supported by funding from partner nations. The meeting also addressed key challenges and opportunities for implementing joint demining projects.
During the meeting, Sopiha provided an update on the current state of demining operations across Ukraine. The parties also discussed critical needs, pressing challenges, and opportunities for launching joint projects in the field of humanitarian demining.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, the Ministry of Defense is actively contributing to the establishment of an international information and innovation training hub focused on humanitarian demining. The hub aims to raise public awareness about mine-related risks and promote safety measures across affected regions.
