Newly elected Polish President Karol Nawrocki plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of a “series of meetings,” but he continues to have reservations about Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the EU.
Nawrocki said this in an interview with Polsat News, according to Ukrinform.
“I will definitely meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of a series of meetings. As president, I will visit all our neighbors… I will have to talk to President Zelensky. Poland and Ukraine have many common interests and many common goals. There are also issues that have not yet been resolved,” Nawrocki said.
In this context, he drew attention to agricultural issues and the exhumation of victims of the Volhyn tragedy.
Touching on the issue of Ukraine’s future membership in NATO, Nawrocki stressed that today “there is no such possibility” because Ukraine is at war, and this would lead to a war involving all Alliance countries.
“I am also opposed to Ukraine’s unconditional membership in the EU. I have no doubt that in a geopolitical and strategic context, we need cooperation with Ukraine, but it must be based on the principle of partnership,” Nawrocki stated.
He also added that Ukraine’s future in Western structures is in Poland’s interests.
As a result of the recent presidential elections in Poland, Karol Nawrocki, head of the Institute of National Remembrance, became the new head of the Polish state. He will officially take office on August 6. During the election campaign, Nawrocki was critical of Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO, and also criticized Kyiv’s position in the context of their shared complex history.
During his visit to Kyiv a few days ago, the current Polish president, Andrzej Duda, said that from the position of the country’s president, the world “looks different” than from the position of another politician, in particular a presidential candidate. Therefore, it will be necessary to wait until the newly elected Polish president, Karol Nawrocki, takes his first steps regarding Ukraine as head of state.
