Kremlin attempts to accuse Ukraine of spreading radioactive materials in Syria – intelligence

Russian intelligence services have launched yet another information attack against Ukraine, this time attempting to accuse it of spreading radioactive substances in Syria.

That is according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), Ukrinform reports.

“In Syria, information is being circulated about the alleged sale of military equipment ‘purchased’ from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. This ‘military equipment’ fabricated by the Russians consists of a cheaply assembled container holding capsules marked PU.94244U (plutonium) and U.92 (uranium). The actual contents of the capsules are unknown,” the statement said.

Ukrainian military intelligence noted that the container and its contents were crudely fabricated — typical of Russian propaganda tactics. The items feature illegible Cyrillic text, a blue adhesive tape used to attach a fake logo of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, and blatant errors in labeling.

“One of the capsules, for example, is marked ‘PU 94244U’ — a rare plutonium isotope, with only a few grams existing in the entire Earth’s crust. For some reason, the container also includes a mechanical wristwatch,” the agency added.

Additionally, Russian operatives are reportedly attempting to sell a Soviet-era chemical reconnaissance device, allegedly “purchased from representatives of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry” who were supposedly involved in radiation, chemical, and biological protection operations in Syria.

The video promoting the “trade offer” is dated “March 13, 2025, Thursday,” in Arabic.

This is not the first attempt at such disinformation. In 2023, a private blog (smoug1985) published a post about an “intercepted Ukrainian container with plutonium.” At the time, Russian sources claimed that they had foiled an alleged U.S. intelligence plot to accuse Russia of using chemical weapons in Syria.

Thus, Moscow has been laying the groundwork for this disinformation campaign since 2023, reusing old props and fabrications.

“This is a Kremlin attempt to damage Ukraine’s reputation in the eyes of the new Syrian leadership, Ukraine’s international partners, and the IAEA,” said Andrii Yusov, a representative of Ukraine’s military intelligence. “The aggressor state continues to manipulate the topic of global nuclear security — and the free world must respond firmly.”
