China says sanctions on Russia will not stop war in Ukraine

China believes that the United States’ tightening of anti-Russian sanctions does not contribute to the resolution of the “Ukrainian conflict,” which can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations.

This was stated at a briefing by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian, commenting on US Senator Lindsey Graham’s proposal to impose a 500% tariff on Russia and its partners, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.

“China strongly opposes any illegal unilateral sanctions and ‘long arm’ jurisdiction [the imposition of sanctions by one country against another on the basis of its own legislation], tariff wars and pressure will not help solve the problem,” Lin said.

“We believe that dialogue and negotiations are the only way to resolve the ‘Ukrainian crisis’ [as the PRC calls Russia’s war against Ukraine],” he added.

The foreign ministry spokesman traditionally reiterated that Beijing has always taken a clear and unambiguous position on the Ukrainian issue.

“We hope that all parties will contribute to creating a favorable atmosphere for a political settlement of the ‘Ukrainian crisis,’ create the necessary conditions, and take more constructive steps toward reconciliation and facilitating negotiations,” the Chinese diplomat said.

Beijing declares neutrality regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, refrains from defining the aggressor and the victim, and continues to make general statements about the need for negotiations, avoiding answers to questions about how to negotiate with Russia, whose regime shows a complete lack of interest in a ceasefire and peace talks and only intensifies its massive shelling of Ukraine.

As reported by Ukrinform, US President Donald Trump said on Monday, July 14, that he was very disappointed with Russia because he had not been able to get Putin to agree to end the war, threatening the Russian side with “very severe tariffs.”
