Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal held a meeting in Kyiv with his Latvian counterpart Evika Silina, during which they discussed a new package of defense assistance, deeper bilateral cooperation, and sanctions against Russia.
Shmyhal announced this via Telegram, Ukrinform reports.
“I’m pleased to welcome Prime Minister Evika Silina to Kyiv. We had a productive and meaningful conversation about our bilateral cooperation. I thanked her for her personal support, Latvia’s leadership, and systematic assistance to Ukraine in military, political, humanitarian, and sanctions-related areas. We value that Latvia remains among the top supporters relative to GDP,” he said.
Shmyhal expressed gratitude for Latvia’s new aid package, which includes heavy armored vehicles Patria.
Silina, in turn, noted that the first batch of armored personnel carriers had already arrived in Ukraine, with the next shipment on the way.
“In total, this includes 42 units of various equipment, worth around EUR 70 million,” Shmyhal said.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries’ manufacturers, particularly in defense industries, innovation, and joint production of equipment and drones.
They also discussed using the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument to finance joint projects.
“We addressed the issue of sanctions policy. We expect the 18th EU sanctions package to be adopted, which would further weaken Russia’s ability to finance its war. We must increase pressure on the aggressor,” Shmyhal said.
The topic of reconstruction was also on the agenda.
“I expressed gratitude for Latvia’s assistance in rebuilding the Chernihiv region. We discussed potential cooperation with Latvian companies in critical infrastructure. I thank the government and people of Latvia for their solidarity and steadfast support for Ukraine,” he added.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday, July 15, at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
