The head of the municipal council ofc, Egils Helmanis, was wounded last night in Ukraine as a result of Russian shelling.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Delfi.

This information was confirmed by the head of the council’s communications department, Patriks Hryva.

Sources in Ukraine told the local government that the mayor’s condition is currently stable.

According to Hryva, Helmanis has been on a business trip to Ukraine since the end of last week, where he and his colleagues delivered about 20 cars with humanitarian aid.

“The exact number of cars and their destination in Ukraine can only be disclosed after the cargo reaches its destination. This is necessary to prevent the information from falling into the hands of the enemy,” Hryva explained.

He noted that Helmanis travels on business trips with aid shipments for the Ukrainian army and civilians every few months.

Hryva currently has no information on whether other local government employees accompanied Helmanis on the trip.

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the embassy had contacted Helmanis. He did not request consular assistance, but the embassy is ready to intervene if necessary. Helmanis intends to return to Latvia on his own.

As reported by Ukrinform, yesterday a delegation from the Republic of Latvia, led by Prime Minister Evika Silina, inspected a house that was damaged during one of the largest Russian attacks on Kyiv.
