President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine is going to work on giving U.S. President Donald Trump more reasons to slap sanctions on Russia.
According to Ukrinform, he mentioned this in an interview with the New York Post.
The President noted that he is “very grateful” to Trump for supporting sanctions against countries that buy Russian oil if Russia refuses to sign an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. At the same time, he noted that the 50-day deadline for Ukraine means only more deaths and destruction for almost two months.
“Fifty days, for us, is just — every day is scary,” Zelensky said.
According to him, the solution to the Russian-Ukrainian war lies in forcing Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to want to end the war against Ukraine.
“Putin does not want a conclusion … so he’s just not ready to compromise. If Ukraine has to do this on its own, we have a very long way to go with a lot of deaths to convince him that it’s important [to end the conflict] because it’s not just words — they need serious leverage,” Zelensky emphasized.
The Ukrainian leader added that although many Russians do not understand the purpose of the war against Ukraine and privately oppose it, they do not speak out because they are “not free” like the Western world.
“They’re afraid that they’re either going to have their money taken away or they’re going to be thrown in jail [if they speak out now]. But when people … are fired from their jobs because there are layoffs because the employer cannot stand it and everything is shrinking because of the economy — then there is always a social explosion,” Zelensky mentioned.
According to him, Trump could end Russia’s war against Ukraine with this strategy, as Putin, obsessed with power, would lose interest in further violence if he lost the support of his people. The President added that Ukraine would like to speed up this process.
“We, for our part, will work to provide more information [to Trump], more arguments for strong sanctions against Russia,” Zelensky stressed.
As reported by Ukrinform, on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he was giving Russia 50 days to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Otherwise, he threatened Russia with sanctions.
