The U.S. Department of State has approved the sale of HAWK Phase III Missile System and Sustainment to Ukraine, as well as related equipment and maintenance services, worth over $170 million.
This was announced in an official statement by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on Wednesday, according to Ukrinform.
“The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine of HAWK Phase III Missile System and Sustainment and related equipment for an estimated cost of $172 million,” the statement said.
In addition, it is noted that the Ukrainian side requested five-ton cargo trucks; spare parts for the HAWK system; refurbishment and system overhaul of HAWK air defense fire units; tool kits; testing equipment; auxiliary equipment, etc.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the ability of Ukraine to provide for its own defense,” the agency said.
As reported, the HAWK system is an American medium-range surface-to-air missile. The third phase (Phase III) of the complex, which features significant modernization, was adopted by the U.S. Armed Forces in 1989.
