The U.S. State Department has approved the sale of equipment and services to Ukraine for the support and maintenance of U.S.-origin air defense systems worth up to $180 million.
This was reported by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (a State Department agency), according to Ukrinform.
“The Government of Ukraine has requested to buy equipment and services to support the training, sustainment, and refurbishment measures of existing U.S.-origin air defense systems,” the agency said.
The order covers: major modifications and maintenance support; spare parts, consumables and accessories, as well as equipment repair and return; staff training; engineering, technical, and logistics services, etc.
This agreement “will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the document says.
It is emphasized that the agreement will help the Armed Forces’ “ability to meet current and future threats by further equipping it to conduct self-defense and regional security mission” due to “robust air defense capability.”
The main contractors will be the American companies Sierra Nevada Corporation, V2X, and the Ukrainian companies Radionix and Systems Electronic Export.
The document does not specify who will pay or compensate for the costs under the agreement.
“Any offset agreement will be defined in negotiations between the purchaser and the contractor,” the agency said.
As reported by Ukrinform, the U.S. State Department approved the sale of HAWK Phase III air defense equipment to Ukraine.
