At the end of the first day of his visit to Japan, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with his Japanese counterpart, Takeshi Iwaya, to discuss a range of issues, including ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just peace.

According to Ukrinform, Sybiha shared details of the meeting in a post on social media platform X.

“We discussed the situation on the battlefield, current diplomatic efforts for a just peace, sanctions policy, cooperation within the UN and common security challenges for our countries,” Sybiha wrote, noting that the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine are also being directly felt in the Asia-Pacific region.

Iwaya, during the meeting, responded with deep empathy to the recent Russian attack on Kyiv and the tragic civilian losses, Sybiha said.

“A key focus was accountability for the crime of aggression. I thanked Japan for its role in the Special Tribunal Core Group, the Register of Damages, and the Compensation Mechanism,” he said.

Sybiha also expressed gratitude to Japan for its generous financial, humanitarian, and reconstruction support. He recalled that ahead lies a major milestone – Japan hosting the Ukraine Mine Action Conference, a crucial step for rebuilding a safe Ukraine.

“We continue working together for our common goal – a just, lasting and comprehensive peace,” Sybiha added.
