Opera singer and member of an anti-drone fire team, Taras Berezhanskyi, shared how his ear for music sometimes helps him distinguish the number of enemy drones in the sky.
He mentioned this in an interview with Ukrinform.
The artist shared that the sound of drone engines is not a continuous hum for him, as it is for most people, but rather separate sounds.
“My perfect pitch sometimes helps me distinguish how many drones are flying. For some people, it sounds like one continuous sound, but I can hear that there is more than one engine running. I can generally orient myself more clearly in space and determine the movement of enemy attacks more accurately by sound. Although the sound is slightly delayed, so sometimes it is misleading,” he said.
Despite his creative profession, Berezhanskyi regularly takes up combat duty alongside his brothers-in-arms as a machine gunner. The mobile fire groups he is part of have become an important link in Kyiv’s air defense.
He also clarified some details of his service. The contract signed with the volunteer unit does not grant postponement from military service.
“On the contrary, volunteer fighters are the first line of reserve forces. Among those serving with us are people who have deferrals, retired, and women. I am a distinguished artist of Ukraine and have a deferral from the theater. This allows me to continue my opera career. In my free time, I sing, and when I’m not working, I serve,” Berezhanskyi said.
The artist considers serving in a volunteer Territorial Defense unit to be the best option for an opera singer, as it allows him to be in the ranks of the Defense Forces during wartime and not lose his opera singing skills, which require constant practice.
As reported, Merited Artist Taras Berezhanskyi is a soloist with the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Solomiya Krushelnytska and the National Philharmonic of Ukraine. Since 2023, he has been serving in the volunteer formation of the “Mriia” Territorial Defense Brigade, which protects the capital from enemy missile and drone attacks.
