Ukrainian society and politicians are not ready to discuss any territorial concessions to Russia.
Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze claimed this in a comment to Ukrinform regarding the track of territorial concessions on the part of Ukraine, as stated in the U.S. President’s statements.
“It is unclear how we have moved from an ultimatum on the need to achieve an unconditional ceasefire to discussing some kind of territorial concessions to achieve a truce, not for peace, not for a stable security situation. Territorial concessions are unacceptable even for peace, let alone for achieving a truce. I do not think that any Ukrainian citizen or politician is ready to even talk about recognizing any occupied territories as part of Russia,” she stressed.
Klympush-Tsintsadze noted that it is currently impossible to say for sure whether any decisions will be made at the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on August 15. She noted that tomorrow, August 13, a conversation between European leaders and the Presidents of Ukraine and the U.S. is scheduled to take place, which may influence the upcoming meeting in Alaska.
“Everything will depend on how much the parties agree on a common vision and approach to Friday’s meeting. Yesterday, Trump even called this meeting with the Russian leader preliminary. Perhaps this indicates that there is a growing understanding that without the participation of Ukraine and Europe, no agreement with Russia can be reached,” she added.
Commenting on Ukraine’s possible participation in the meeting, the MP stated that as of today, the U.S. Administration has made it clear that neither Ukraine nor the EU will take part in the talks.
“This is, of course, problematic and concerning for both us and our European partners,” she said.
As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet on August 15 in Alaska.
President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Putin wants to exchange a pause in the war for the legalization of the occupation of part of Ukraine’s territory.
The White House is considering inviting the President of Ukraine to the meeting.
