In peace negotiations with Russia, diplomacy would have a chance if Ukraine received military support from Europe or the United States.
This opinion was expressed in a comment to Ukrinform by Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the Bundestag and member of the ruling Christian Democratic Union party.
“At present, there is no real chance—neither from a military nor a political point of view—for peace talks that would be beneficial to Ukraine and Europe. We should have no illusions about this. Unfortunately, Donald Trump is neither on the side of Ukraine nor on the side of the rules-based international order. He is not interested in Europe, but rather sees it as a sphere of influence and himself as part of a multipolar team,” Kiesewetter said.
According to him, given Russia’s approach to “negotiations,” it is unlikely that results favorable to Ukraine can be achieved. The only thing that would be in Ukraine’s interest is for Russia to stop its attacks and withdraw its troops. However, this should not be expected, the deputy believes. In his opinion, by meeting with Putin in Alaska, Trump is “causing serious damage to Europe and Ukraine and creating a situation of blackmail.”
The German politician believes that diplomacy without military force has failed, and Russia perceives Europe’s inaction as weakness.
“Diplomacy would only have a chance if the Europeans or the US provided military support, for example, by supplying Ukraine with long-range precision weapons or by involving their personnel to provide air defense. Since key European states, such as Germany, are still not ready to do so, there is no real chance for diplomatic progress in Ukraine’s favor,” said the member of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs.
At the same time, he does not rule out that Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian territories will lead to Ukraine being divided, which will create the basis for a rapid expansion of the war and an attack by the Russian Federation on the Baltic states.
The politician noted that Russia seeks to annex the entire Ukrainian territory, violating international law. It is particularly targeting Donbas for both military and economic reasons.
Commenting on developments on the front lines, Kiesewetter expressed the opinion that this could have serious consequences, especially in terms of the motivation and combat readiness of Ukrainian soldiers.
At the same time, the disappointment of Ukrainian society, particularly due to a lack of trust in European states, could provoke further refugee movements.
In addition, any outcome of the negotiations could affect sanctions against Russia and military support for Ukraine, Kiesewetter believes.
“All this works against Ukraine. Therefore, German politicians are wrong to say that it is always good to talk and negotiate. Talks and negotiations with an aggressor and imperial warmonger like Russia are not good because Russia negotiates under the slogan ‘What’s mine is mine, what’s yours is negotiable’. Russia sees our willingness to negotiate as weakness and mercilessly exploits our stupidity,” the deputy concluded.
As reported, on August 15, US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Putin in Alaska.
On August 13, Berlin organized consultations with European partners, in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrived in Germany, is also participating.
