A virtual meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukrainian allies in NATO will be held to prepare the American leader for negotiations with Putin.
Europe is wary of insidious decisions that may be taken in Alaska, said Yevheniia Kravchuk, Chairperson of the PACE Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media and a member of the Servant of the People faction, in comments to Ukrinform.
“For Putin, this visit to Alaska is obviously more than just a way out of political isolation. His goal is to create a rift between the U.S. and its allies. He wants to create quarrels between the U.S. and Europe and between the U.S. and Ukraine. He wants to create a rift that Russian propaganda will then exploit using all its available information resources. This will be especially effective with the help of Putin’s political proxies in Europe. To prevent this scenario, Trump needs to be ‘prepared’ by Europe, which should happen on August 14. This is what NATO Secretary General Rutte, Merz, and all our other allies will be working on today,” Kravchuk explained.
According to the MP, the most dangerous and sensitive issue at the Trump-Putin meeting will be the Kremlin’s territorial claims to the occupied territories of Ukraine.
“In my view, the issue of Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic and European integration is not the most dangerous among those that may be discussed. We are talking about territorial issues and Russia’s claims to the occupied territories. We understand that Europe is definitely wary of backroom deals. The point is that Trump and Putin should not make any decisions (unacceptable to Ukraine) in Alaska and not present everyone, including Europe, with a fait accompli. Europe is definitely not interested in any peaceful solution for Ukraine at Ukraine’s expense. Especially when it comes to territorial claims. This is a dangerous precedent not only for Ukraine, but for Europe as a whole. After all, the issue of recognizing the annexation of foreign territories, which is, of course, a subject of pressure from the Kremlin, could trigger a chain of territorial claims that would destroy Europe altogether. We are talking about the world order that was agreed upon after World War II: the borders of sovereign states cannot be changed by force,” Kravchuk emphasized.
As reported by Ukrinform, Donald Trump intends to meet with Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska.
Rallies are planned in downtown Anchorage on the eve and the day of the Trump-Putin summit.
