After the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, U.S. President Donald Trump may start putting pressure on Ukraine again.
This assumption was made by Kyiv political analyst Oleh Lisnyi in an interview on the Ukrinform YouTube channel.
“We must be prepared for Trump to put pressure on us again. He will see something in Putin’s eyes — just as he sees ‘intelligence’ in Orbán’s eyes, he will see ‘peace’ in Putin’s. And he will say: Let’s go along with what Putin has proposed. Hypothetically, Russia wants to sell the idea that Ukraine should give up territory, Russia will cease fire, and then something will happen later. Of course, they know we will not agree to give up territory. And they will try to sell Trump the narrative that they supposedly want peace, while Zelensky does not, and therefore he should be pressured,” Lisnyi suggested.
Meanwhile, he believes that the Russian leader, inspired by the very fact of the meeting with his American counterpart, may start to put pressure on him, and then Trump’s mood will change.
“I think both Zelensky and the Ukrainian team are prepared for what may come. This has happened before — not once or twice, but at least thirty times. We need to be ready for it and avoid panicking over the possibility of straining relations with the United States. If we damage them, we can repair them. That’s the only way to deal with Trump. He has already maintained a negative stance toward Putin for quite some time, which means he could do so again. I hope that Putin, having secured so much from the outset, will keep pressing Trump to get what he wants. If that happens, this meeting could prove historic in the sense that Trump might finally realize he is being played. And that would be the version of Trump we like,” the political analyst noted.
According to Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet on August 15 in Alaska. Before this meeting, EU leaders signed a statement in support of Ukraine, with Hungary not joining. EU leaders stressed that the path to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine cannot be determined without Ukraine’s participation.
