The possible withdrawal of U.S. President Donald Trump from the peace negotiation process represents an undesirable scenario for Ukraine, but not a critical one. Kyiv retains alternative channels of support, particularly through Europe and the U.S. Congress.
This opinion was expressed by Oleksandr Merezhko, Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, in a comment to Ukrinform.
“Trump has stated that he may withdraw from the peace process altogether if a certain consensus is not reached. Is this dangerous for Ukraine? Yes, it’s a negative signal. Some of the weapons we receive from the U.S. cannot be replaced by European aid—especially air defense systems like the Patriot,” Merezhko said.
At the same time, the MP emphasized that the U.S. Congress remains broadly supportive of Ukraine. “So even if Trump adopts a tough stance, there are still opportunities for cooperation with the American legislature. It’s essential to intensify engagement with Congress,” he added.
Merezhko also noted Europe’s consistent support for Ukraine, citing both a joint statement by EU foreign ministers and individual declarations from the German Chancellor, the French President, and the British Prime Minister.
“For them, this is not only a matter of solidarity, but also one of their own security. That’s why this support will persist regardless of Trump’s stance. Even if Trump stops supporting Ukraine, it would be painful but not critical. We can still rely on assistance from the EU and prospects for cooperation with the U.S. Congress, which holds the authority over budgetary and funding decisions,” the head of the parliamentary committee affirmed.
He also noted that there are still people within Trump’s team who support Ukraine.
“Trump himself is an unpredictable figure. He has shifted his stance before. So even now, there’s a chance to influence his position. It’s important to keep working in that direction and not lose hope,” Merezhko concluded.
As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska on August 15.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to exchange a pause in the war for the legalization of the occupation of part of Ukraine’s territory.
