President Volodymyr Zelensky had a conversation with European Council President António Costa, focusing on several key issues: the outcomes of recent negotiations in Washington, the development of the EU’s new sanctions package against Russia, and the opening of negotiation clusters.
The head of Ukrainian state shared details of the conversation on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.
“I spoke with the European Council President, António Costa. He has just chaired a meeting of the European Council dedicated to the outcomes of our negotiations that we and our European colleagues held with President Trump in Washington. We have taken an important step toward ending this war and ensuring security for Ukraine and the whole of Europe. Reliable security guarantees for Ukraine that will work are the most important achievement of our joint efforts, of all our partners, and above all of the Ukrainian courage that defended our independence,” he noted.
Zelensky said he discussed the results of the European Council meeting and further joint actions.
“We value the unity and unwavering support of the European Union. We agreed to continue working closely together. We also talked about our next steps and the preparation of the new, 19th EU sanctions package against Russia. Pressure must be increased until Russia takes real steps to stop the war,” the head of Ukrainia state stressed.
Separately, they discussed the importance of unity among all 27 EU member states for Ukraine’s path toward EU membership and the opening of negotiation clusters.
As reported by Ukrinform, European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta stated that peace negotiations without an actual ceasefire will not affect the preparation of the EU’s 19th sanctions package against Russia.
