U.S. President Donald Trump has stated his desire to meet with Vladimir Putin as soon as possible to bring an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
This was reported by Reuters and relayed by Ukrinform.
Speaking via video link at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump emphasized his readiness to engage with Putin: “I really would like to be able to meet with President Putin soon to get that war ended. And that’s not from the standpoint of economy or anything else. It’s from the standpoint of millions of lives are being wasted … It’s a carnage. And we really have to stop that war.”
Trump also mentioned ongoing U.S. efforts to ensure a peaceful resolution but did not provide specific details.
Later, during remarks at the White House, Trump reiterated his willingness to meet Putin: “From what I hear, Putin would like to see me, and we’ll leave as soon as we can. I’d meet immediately. Everyday we don’t meet, soldiers are being killed in the battlefield.”
Trump also noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had expressed a willingness to negotiate an agreement to end the war.
The U.S. President highlighted his intention to work toward nuclear disarmament. “We’d like to see denuclearization… and I will tell you President Putin really liked the idea of cutting way back on nuclear. And I think the rest of the world, we would have gotten them to follow, and China would have come along too,” Trump said.
As reported earlier, Trump expressed hope that China could leverage its influence over Russia to help end the war in Ukraine.
