A lasting peace in Ukraine is possible only with security guarantees, which Europe and the United States must work on together.
This was emphasized by Patrick Turner, Head of the NATO Representation in Ukraine, at the Kyiv Security Forum, a Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“To make a peace sustainable means security guarantees. There has been a start of a serious discussion about that. The U.S. and Europe have been discussing that in recent days. And we are confident, speaking from NATO, that there can be effective guarantees, with Europe and the U.S. working together,” he stated.
Turner noted that European allies and Canada, which have spent less on defense than the U.S., now recognize the need to step up their efforts. At the same time, he pointed out that ensuring security within NATO requires an increase in defense production on both sides of the Atlantic.
“Other countries — China, North Korea, Iran — are watching extremely closely what happens here, and the outcome here needs to deter them rather than encourage them. This matters for global security as well as for security in this region,” the NATO representative concluded.
As Ukrinform previously reported, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stressed that to ensure the Alliance’s defense capabilities and maintain effective military support for Ukraine, all NATO allies must increase defense spending and invest in their defense industries.
