Energoatom National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine and the U.S. company Westinghouse have agreed to jointly work on enhancing the safety of power unit 3 and power unit 4 at Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and adjusting fuel for them.

The relevant statement was made by Energoatom’s press service, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

At the meeting, the management of Energoatom and Westinghouse discussed the key aspects of increasing the safety of power unit 3 and power unit 4 at Khmelnytskyi NPP.

“Currently, Westinghouse is performing a GAP analysis of the Kh3, Kh4 project to introduce modern safety systems, including long-term heat removal from the reactor compartment containment,” the report states.

The completed power units are expected to reach the safety level of Westinghouse’s modern reactors, AP1000.

Additionally, during the meeting, the parties agreed to continue work on adjusting the Westinghouse fuel for power unit 3 and power unit 4, along with the option of an 18-month reload cycle.

Hence, a joint team of professionals from Energoatom and Westinghouse will be working on these projects.

A reminder that, on February 11, 2025, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported the procurement of Russian-made equipment from Bulgaria to finish the construction of two power units at Khmelnytskyi NPP.
