The Slovak government will not support Ukraine financially or militarily to continue its war against Russia, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico.
He said this in a statement on X, referencing the February 28 meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to Ukrinform.
“Slovakia will not support Ukraine either financially or militarily to enable it to continue the war. If others choose to do so, we will respect that,” Fico said.
He also criticized what he called the “unrealistic strategy of ‘peace through strength,'” suggesting that it serves only as a justification for continuing the war.
Additionally, Fico proposed that the final conclusions of the EU summit on March 6 should include a call for an immediate ceasefire, regardless of when a final peace agreement is reached.
The Slovak prime minister also demanded that the EU summit document include a clear requirement to restore the transit of gas through Ukraine to Slovakia and Western Europe.
“If the summit does not respect that there are other opinions besides simply continuing the war, the European Council may not be able to agree on conclusions regarding Ukraine on Thursday,” Fico warned.
Earlier, Ukrinform reported that President Zelensky’s meeting with Trump on Friday was cut short, with discussions between Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President JD Vance at the White House becoming increasingly heated.
