France may change its stance on using frozen Russian assets

France’s position on the use of frozen Russian Central Bank assets could evolve, although legal issues need to be addressed first.

This was stated by French Minister for Europe Benjamin Haddad during an interview on France 2, as reported by Ukrinform.

“This raises legal questions, but it is one of the levers we are paying attention to. It is one of the mechanisms available to us in the struggle against Russia. Essentially, the question will arise about the resources we will need to provide both at the national and European level to strengthen our ability to support Ukraine,” he explained.

Haddad also commented on the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine, stating that such actions only distance peace. He emphasized: “Essentially, if we want peace, the decision to suspend weapon supplies to Ukraine takes us further from it; it will only strengthen the hand of the aggressor, Russia.”

He stressed that the pressure should not be placed on Ukraine, as has been the case in recent weeks, but rather on Russia, the aggressor.

“If we want to end this war, we must put pressure on the aggressor, which is Russia, and not on Ukraine,” Haddad stated.

The minister also highlighted that this Thursday, a “historic and decisive” European Council meeting will take place in Brussels, where financial measures to strengthen European defense will be announced.

He added: “And of course, there will be continued support for Ukrainians, who need to gain a favorable balance of power so they can return to negotiations and achieve lasting peace, for which Europeans will need to take on responsibility with security guarantees.”

As reported by Ukrinform, the main outcome of recent meetings in Paris and London was the clear and undeniable unity among EU leaders and their international partners in supporting Ukraine.
