The tactics of Russian occupation forces in the Kharkiv sector remain largely unchanged, as they continue their unsuccessful attempts to push Ukraine’s Defense Forces out of Vovchansk.
Pavlo Shamshyn, spokesperson for the Kharkiv Operational and Tactical Group of Forces, stated this on Ukrainian television, according to Ukrinform.
“The enemy’s tactics in the Kharkiv sector have not significantly changed in recent days. In most areas, Russian forces remain on the defensive, adjusting their actions based on the maneuvers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” Shamshyn said.
According to him, the fiercest fighting is taking place in Vovchansk, where Russian troops are attempting to drive Ukrainian forces out of the city — so far without success.
“The enemy is trying to use underground infrastructure to amass forces and launch attacks. Over the past 24 hours, there were several attempts to assault Ukrainian positions in the Vovchansk area, all of which were successfully repelled by the Ukrainian Defense Forces,” he added.
Shamshyn noted that after three years of full-scale war, the battlefield dynamics have shifted significantly. Initially resembling a 20th-century-style conventional war, with heavy use of artillery, armored formations, and aircraft, today’s warfare is dominated by drones. The enemy also primarily relies on drones for both reconnaissance and combat operations.
Weather conditions further complicate the situation.
Shamshyn said that neither side can control the weather, but both must account for it. “Clear skies allow the enemy to conduct aerial reconnaissance, while overcast conditions prompt them to act based on previously gathered intelligence,” he said.
Foggy weather presents another challenge, as Russian forces use it to attempt stealthy advances toward Ukrainian positions.
“However, we have the means to detect enemy movements even in poor visibility. Our forces employ drones equipped with infrared sensors, which allow us to spot and neutralize hostile groups despite the fog,” he said.
Regarding logistics, Shamshyn highlighted a major shift in supply strategies. He said that previously, transport vehicles played a key role in delivering supplies to the front lines. However, with the battlefield and supply routes now under near-constant enemy surveillance, Ukrainian forces are increasingly turning to drone-based logistics, he said.
The enemy faces similar logistical challenges, Shamshyn said.
