The murder of journalist Viktoria Roshchina, whose body was handed over to the Ukrainian side with signs of torture, is yet another evidence of the inhuman cruelty of the Russian invaders toward Ukrainians, whose lives and freedoms in the temporarily occupied areas constantly remain under threat.

This was stated today in Brussels during a press briefing by the European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Russia does not miss any opportunity to show its depicable brutality towards the Ukrainians by killing and torturing, as it was the case with Viktoria Roshchina, a brave Ukrainian journalist who was brutally not only killed, but also tortured previously. So this clearly shows that life under Russian occupation is not a safe option for the Ukrainians. This journalist and her courage will always be remembered. We will do everything possible in our powers to make sure that they (Russia – ed.) remain accountable for all these war crimes and atrocities committed,” the European Commission spokeswoman said.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets yesterday informed international partners of the established facts of torture against Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchina, who died in Russian captivity.

After a long delay, the Russian side handed over the body to Ukraine with some internal organs pulled out, and accompanying paperwork where she was listed as an “unidentified male”.

Viktoriya Roshchina went missing in August 2023 during a trip to the territories temporarily occupied by Russia. According to rights activists, the journalist was held in two of the most notorious prisons in the Russian Federation.
