An information installation dedicated to the pages of the history of the Crimean Tatar people was opened in Kyiv’s Peace Square.

This was reported by the Crimean Tatar Resource Center on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.

“An information installation dedicated to the tragic and heroic pages of the history of the Crimean Tatar people – from the first imperial oppression to the modern struggle for the right to live in their native land – was opened in Kyiv near the Memorial to the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people,” the statement reads.

The center informed that the historical block of the exhibition recreates the key events that resulted from the colonial policy of the Russian Empire and its successors, the Soviet Union and modern Russia.

Visitors can get acquainted with the following events: the first annexation of Crimea in 1783, the deportation in 1944, when the Soviet authorities committed an act of genocide against the Crimean Tatar people, and the occupation of the peninsula by Russia in 2014.

According to the center, “the second block of the installation is the voices of families. Personal testimonies of the descendants of those who survived the deportation, who returned to Crimea in the 1970s and 1980s, despite bans, control, and discrimination. These are the stories of people who have preserved their language, faith, and identity despite all attempts to break them.”

The organizers of the opening of the information installation are the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the Crimean Platform, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, and the Center for Crimean Studies of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, The National Memorial Complex of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes – Museum of the Revolution of Dignity, the Crimea Daily media initiative, the Crimean House State Enterprise, TRO Media, and the Partnership for a Strong Ukraine Foundation, which is funded by the governments of the United Kingdom, Estonia, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, and the United States of America.
