The Pentagon has halted shipments of some air defense missiles and other precision munitions to Ukraine due to worries that U.S. weapons stockpiles have fallen too low.
That is according to Politico, citing its own sources, Ukrinform reports.
The decision was driven by the Pentagon’s policy chief, Elbridge Colby, and was made after a review of Pentagon munitions stockpiles, leading to concerns that the total number of artillery rounds, air defense missiles and precision munitions was sinking, according to three people familiar with the issue.
According to Politico, the initial decision to withhold some aid promised during the Biden administration came in early June, but is only taking effect now as Ukraine is beating back some of the largest Russian barrages of missiles and drones at civilian targets in Kyiv and elsewhere.
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said that the decision “was made to put America’s interests first following a DOD review of our nation’s military support and assistance to other countries across the globe.”
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump met on the sidelines of the NATO summit in The Hague. During the meeting, Trump did not rule out the possibility of providing Ukraine with additional Patriot missile systems and interceptors.
