The Honorary Consul of Ukraine begins work in Atlanta

In the city of Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the new Honorary Consul of Ukraine, American attorney with years of experience Tetiana Lendiel, is beginning her work. She will expand Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts in America and promote regional cooperation.

According to Ukrinform’s correspondent, Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova on Monday signed with Lendiel an Agreement on consular functions and duties and handed her a consular patent.

“Without exaggeration, every achievement of Ukrainian diplomacy here in Washington is in one way or another connected to our work in the regions. What our consuls general and honorary consuls do is an integral part of this work,” said Ambassador Markarova during the ceremony.

She emphasized that Atlanta is “a very important city” in this context, where “business is booming” and many events take place, and where there is significant influence on the U.S. Congress, the White House, and the overall situation in the United States. According to her, the appointment of a new honorary consul expands Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in the U.S. and contributes to the development of regional cooperation, which is among the priorities of the Embassy of Ukraine in Washington.

Tetiana Lendiel, in turn, assured that she “will do everything within her capabilities to support the advancement of Ukraine’s interests.”

Lendiel serves as a senior attorney at the regional office of one of the largest U.S. law firms, Greenberg Traurig, specializing in immigration law. With her active involvement, a sister-city agreement between Chamblee, Georgia, and Kovel, Volyn region, was signed in November 2022. She also organized and conducted the first mobile consular services for citizens in Georgia.

Thus, there are now 11 Honorary Consuls of Ukraine operating in various U.S. cities.

Honorary Consuls of Ukraine are non-staff consuls whose primary activities focus on developing trade, economic, cultural, and scientific ties between Ukraine and the United States. Additionally, their work supports interregional cooperation, promotes Ukrainian culture, and protects the rights and lawful interests of Ukrainian citizens and legal entities within their consular districts.

According to the 2020 U.S. census, over 13,000 Ukrainians lived in Georgia. Currently, their number is estimated at 25,000, taking into account internal labor migration and the arrival of temporarily displaced persons from Ukraine. The region is home to branches of Ukrainian diaspora organizations – the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America.
