Journalists have identified the names of 122,883 Russian soldiers who died during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which is more than 2,500 more than two weeks ago.

This is stated in a joint report by the Russian BBC service and the publication Mediazona, prepared on the basis of open data, Ukrinform reports.

It is noted that 53% of all those killed are volunteers, conscripts, and convicts who went to war from correctional colonies, i.e., people who were not connected to the army at the start of the war.

In particular, 27% of the identified casualties among Russian military personnel are volunteers who signed a contract after the start of the full-scale invasion. In 2023, they accounted for only 14% of the total losses of the Russian Federation.

Fourteen percent of all known casualties are convicts and prisoners from correctional colonies, and 11% are mobilized personnel.

According to journalists, since October 2023, daily losses of Russian troops in the war in Ukraine rarely fall below 120 dead per day. Previously, this figure fluctuated: on some days, 100-150 deaths were confirmed by journalists, and on others, about 50-60.

Russia also continues to suffer losses not only among ordinary soldiers, but also among highly qualified personnel – officers. A total of 5,540 officers are known to have been killed since the beginning of the invasion. Among them are 12 generals. But the loss of junior officers has the strongest impact on the combat capability of units. To date, 4,074 military personnel with ranks from lieutenant to captain are known to have been killed.

According to experts, this leads to a serious loss of tactical coordination. Simply put, units begin to act in a fragmented manner, interfering with each other on the battlefield and even coming under “friendly fire.”

Journalists suggest that the actual number of casualties on the Russian side could be between 189,051 and 273,073 people.

As reported by Ukrinform, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the total combat losses of Russian troops from February 24, 2022, to August 8, 2025, in the war against Ukraine amount to about 1,061,350 people, of which 1,040 were lost in the past 24 hours.
