Expert: Trump intends to hold a meeting with Putin in format of “global bargain”

U.S. President Donald Trump, having initiated a meeting in Alaska, intends to hold it in the format of a “global bargain.” The issue of Ukraine will be raised at the talks, but the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region, and all of Europe will also be discussed.

This was stated in a comment to Ukrinform by Turkish international expert, journalist, and commentator for leading television channels, Güngör Yavuzaslan.

“The summit in Alaska is taking place at Trump’s request. Most of the topics will concern Ukraine, and he wants to turn them into a global trade format… Trump forced Putin to come to him. In my opinion, this is the most important thing. Alaska is a former Russian territory, and the fact that he managed to hold the meeting there is the first sign that Putin has conceded to Trump,” Güngör Yavuzaslan noted.

The expert stressed that the talks in Alaska will focus primarily on Ukraine, but will also cover the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region, and Europe as a whole.

“U.S. President Trump has a plan for Ukraine. He said that after the meeting, he will call Ukrainian President Zelensky and his European colleagues. Of course, a plan that Kyiv does not accept cannot be implemented. And here, of course, it is worth paying attention to the position of European countries,” Yavuzaslan added.

He is convinced that Istanbul will remain the main venue for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

“Ukraine has provided the Russian party [in Istanbul] with its expectations and proposals, its vision of a peace plan and a ceasefire plan, both in writing and verbally. Ukraine does not accept any agreement other than one that provides for the withdrawal of Russians from the occupied territories and demands security guarantees. Ukraine will maintain its stance. This is what diplomacy and negotiations are all about. In our opinion, the solution to the issue [ending the war] is in Istanbul,” he concluded.

As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet on August 15 in Alaska. Before this meeting, EU leaders signed a statement in support of Ukraine, with Hungary not joining. EU leaders stressed that the path to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine cannot be determined without Ukraine’s participation.
