Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 26th, 2022

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is mostly focused on russian offensive in Donbas. The disinformation campaign against Ukraine is shifting into overdrive. It is clear that russia wants to break Ukrainian morale and will to fight, and the propagandist effort to achieve this is immense. The intensity of russians narratives about the inevitable and total Ukrainian defeat and the uselessness of western military aid is reaching hysteric levels. russia is trying to make Ukrainians believe that they are alone and helpless.

russian propaganda keeps working on creating an image of prosperity in the occupied Ukrainian territories. According to them, the Kherson region is doing so much better, and people are happy under russian rule. Meanwhile, russian army is stealing thousands of tonnes of grain and food products from the region and russian soldiers are raping, killing, and marauding in cities and villages.

Main fake narratives:

  • NATO and the EU are orchestrating a global food crisis
  • The US was developing bioweapons in Ukraine
  • Poland is planning to capture western Ukraine
  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • The west is controlling Ukraine
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: Two Polish battalions are already in Ukraine

Source:

Disproof:

This fake is a continuation of russian propaganda narrative about Poland’s plans to annex the west of Ukraine. russian propaganda is trying to assure its audience that Ukrainian allies are not going to help Ukraine, and sow discord between Poland and Ukraine. But, the facts are facts: there are no Polish soldiers in Ukraine. If there were, Ukrainians would probably be glad to see them, as that would mean that Poland is joining the fight against russia.

FAKE: Ukraine was trying to build a dirty bomb in Zaporizhzhia

Source:

Disproof:

This fake is making a comeback after IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated his concern about the large cash of nuclear fuel in Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station getting into the russian hands. russian propaganda somehow decided that his statement proved that Ukraine was creating a dirty bomb. Cheers to russian logic.

Firstly, Zaporizhzhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, and the amount of fuel stored there, although massive at a first glance, is barely enough to fuel the plant for more than six months. Secondly, claiming that Ukraine, a country that already suffered the worst nuclear disaster in history, was creating a dirty bomb with 70 tons of uranium and plutonium in the middle of its most fertile regions is just insane. And what would that even accomplish? Irradiate half the country just to blame russia? russian propaganda is getting dumber by the day.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
