Information Warfare: russian fakes for March 26th 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering Russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of Russian fakes.

Today, russian information space is dominated by the measures the government takes to ease the blow dealt to the economy by sanctions. Less attention is given to the military successes, the official statements from the government and the military concerning the war have become more neutral. There is a tendency to retroactively change the goals of the war, the population is being prepared to accept less grandiose results than before.

Main fake narratives:

  • Ukrainian biolabs
  • Civilians held hostage by nationalists
  • Ukrainian refugees are bringing crime
  • Whataboutism: there were other wars, but nobody reacted to them like they are reacting now

We can see the cyclical nature of russian fakes: fakes that were used at the outset of the war are coming back, like the one about “documents” that prove that Ukraine was planning an invasion of the Donbass region.

FAKE: US are helping Ukraine at the Europe’s cost

Source:

Disproof:

Russian propaganda is warping the statements from US President Joe Biden, made at a joint press conference with Ursula von der Leyen. This US and EU announcement came after NATO, the G7 and European Union all held summits where securing Europe’s independence from Russia’s energy was discussed. The decision to buy US gas instead of russian and to search for alternative sources of energy was a joint decision of European countries.

Original quote from US President Joe Biden: “I know that eliminating Russian gas will have costs for Europe, but it’s not only the right thing to do from a moral standpoint, it’s going to put us on a much stronger strategic footing”.

FAKE: Russia is only defending its citizens and does not capture land

Source:

Disproof:

Russian propaganda is contradicting itself once again. According to the russian officials, Russia is already creating military administrations to govern in the occupied regions (see picture below). The plans to forcefully introduce rubles are in motion, russian soldiers have kidnapped many Ukrainian mayors, officials, journalists and activists, and have been forcefully deporting both children and adults into Russia.

FAKE: The West is “canceling” russian culture

Source:

Disproof:

Museums and galleries around the world are declining to showcase russian art because of the understanding that such showcases will be used by Russia as an “evidence” of the worldwide support of their actions, as they were in the past. The world is taking a step back from russian culture because it is widely known that Russia uses any favorable coverage as a weapon. The russian cultural heritage is not bound to Russia, it exists regardless of the state of Russia.

Be advised: Russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
