Information Warfare: russian fakes for April 9th 2022

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering Russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of Russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is continuing the campaign to deny russian war crimes. New fakes about future “provocations” on the territories liberated from the russian forces, and where investigations into their crimes had already begun, appear with increasing frequency. As always, the propaganda activity is lower on the weekends. The calls for abandonment of peace talks and “fighting until the glorious victory” continue to appear.

Main fake narratives:

  • Ukraine attacked the Kramatorsk train station
  • The “Bucha Massacre” is fake
  • World is blind to Ukrainian war crimes
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime
  • Sanctions against Russia are destroying Europe
  • Russophobia is dominating the world

FAKE: “Liberated” Kherson is the safest place in Ukraine

Source:

Disproof:

Russian propaganda is trying to create an illusion that the cities captured by russians are faring even better than before the war. This should support the narrative about the “liberation” of Ukraine from the mythical nazis. But the evidence from the occupied territories tell a different story. In his interview, which was quoted by the russian propagandists themselves, the mayor of Kherson had talked about russian soldiers marauding and terrorizing the city. Similar stories are coming from other occupied cities, like Melitopol. And the whole world had seen the destruction and atrocities committed by russians in Bucha and other suburbs of Kyiv

FAKE: Kyiv is preparing new provocations with murdered civilians

Source:

Disproof:

With the beginning of a full-fledged investigation of russian war crimes in the territories liberated from russian troops, russian leadership had understood that the atrocities their army had committed would be revealed in the coming days. Russian propaganda started to work to outrun the news, publishing fakes that accuse Ukraine of future “staged” war crimes on the liberated territories. This signals that the russian atrocities in Bucha and the other suburbs of Kyiv are just the tip of the iceberg. The Kremlin had never intended to fall back from the territories it captured, so there were no attempts to hide their crimes, and now they are scrambling to somehow cover their tracks.

FAKE: The war in Ukraine started because of the genocide of the people of Donbas

Source:

Disproof:

On March 16, the UN International Court had ruled that russia “shall immediately suspend the military operations that it commenced on 24 February.” The court’s ruling – the first such verdict handed down by the ‘world court’ since the russian invasion began – is in response to a suit filed by Ukraine on 27 February, accusing russia of manipulating the concept of genocide to justify its military aggression.

The Court had deemed russian accusations of genocide against Ukraine baseless and a distortion of the concept of genocide. russia had ignored the Court’s ruling.

FAKE: The missile that hit Kramatorsk was Ukrainian

Source:

Disproof:

After the missile attack on the Kramatorsk train station, russian propaganda is doing anything it can to accuse Ukraine of the attack. This time, they are claiming that, according to the serial number from the missile casing, the missile belongs to the same unit that had attacked Donetsk in the past, and so, is Ukrainian. Even if we assume that the serial numbers mean something and can be used to identify the unit that was using the missile, Ukraine never used missiles to attack the cities of the so-called DPR and LPR. So, it is no wonder that the missiles launched at Kramatorsk and Donetsk have similar serial numbers – they all belong to russia.

Be advised: Russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
