Information Warfare: russian fakes for March 27th 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering Russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of Russian fakes.

Today, russian information space is dominated by the supposed discord between western nations and the ineffectiveness of sanctions against russia. The official statements concerning the war have become more moderate, a lot of attention is given to the missile attacks against Ukraine and the supposed russian humanitarian aid. There is a tendency to showcase the supposed worldwide “russophobia” – Russia is attempting to show itself as a victim.

Main fake narratives:

  • Ukrainian biolabs
  • Civilians held hostage by nationalists
  • Ukrainian refugees are bringing crime
  • Whataboutism: there were other wars, but nobody reacted to them like they are reacting now
  • Russophobia is dominating the world

FAKE: Ukraine was close to making a “dirty bomb”

Source:

Disproof:

russia had repeatedly accused Ukraine of attempting to create atomic weapons in the past, and now, once again, is using this narrative to justify the invasion. Creating a “dirty bomb” on Ukrainian soil would hurt Ukraine the most. According to the russian propaganda, one of the villains in this insidious “anti-russian” plot is IAEA – an international organization with 173 countries as its members. Russia is a founding member of IAEA. Truly, we can see the “World vs Russia” narrative in action.

FAKE: Nazis have mined a dam in Odessa

Source:

Disproof:

The fakes about Ukrainian Nazis are one of the ways Russia attempts to justify the war in Ukraine to its internal audience. The Governor of Odessa Oblast had refuted this fake and called for the citizens of Odessa and the region to be vigilant and not trust information from questionable sources, and to notify SSU of facts of dissemination of such fakes.

Russian propaganda often uses such fakes to accuse Ukraine of russian acts of terrorism.

Be advised: Russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
