Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 15th, 2022

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is not as active, as is usual on weekends.

Ukraine has won the Eurovision 2022 song contest, which irritated russian propagandists to no end. They are now claiming that Ukraine winning means that Europe is filled with Nazis, and it is good that russia is banned from the contest since it shelters russians from the depravity of the “gay loving Europe”. Even performers waving their hands to the crowd was portrayed as a Nazi salute.

The Biolabs narrative is back, it seems to pop up every time russia needs additional leverage for negotiations.

russian ambassador in the US said that russia will not capitulate in the war against Ukraine. That means that russian government is actually thinking about a prospect of capitulation, so we could see an increase in russian negotiation efforts in the future.

Main fake narratives:

  • The US was developing bioweapons in Ukraine
  • Poland is planning to capture western Ukraine
  • NATO weapons are useless
  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • The west is controlling Ukraine
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: The food prices in the world are growing because of sanctions against russia

Source:

Disproof:

Ukraine exports around 42% of the world’s sunflower oil, 10% of wheat and barley, and 16% of corn, not counting other cultures, fruits and vegetables. Most of the Ukrainian food exports are delivered by sea, and russian warships are blocking the main Ukrainian ports. russians regularly attack Ukrainian grain silos and mine the farmlands. In the occupied territories, they steal Ukrainian farming equipment, grain, and vegetable stores. russian forces are deliberately targeting Ukrainian agricultural infrastructure to disrupt the planting season and cause food shortages around the world.

It is plain to see that russia is trying to create a global food shortage and starve millions of people to get what it wants. russian actions speak louder than their lies.

FAKE: Ukraine suffered huge losses while trying to cross a river in the Luhansk region

Source:

Disproof:

This is a new trick of russian propaganda: when russian army suffers a terrible defeat, they take Ukrainian photos and video evidence of it and present the whole thing as a Ukrainian defeat. They did that with the attack on the Snake Island on May 8th, and now they are doing it with the Bilohorivka river crossing.

Around May 10 russian forces tried to cross the Siverskyi Donets river near the village of Bilohorivka. The pontoon bridges were destroyed, and an entire russian battalion tactical group was trapped and annihilated by Ukrainian forces. The images of destroyed pontoons and dozens of burned, abandoned, or sunk tanks and combat vehicles quickly spread through the Internet. And now, Russian propaganda claims that all of those are Ukrainian, even though Russian markings are clearly visible on the destroyed armor.

This may be a new propaganda paradigm for russia: if you pretend hard enough that your defeats are actually victories, maybe it will come true.

FAKE: Ukraine planted explosives on the Zarya chemical plant in Rubizhne

Source:

Disproof:

Firstly, the Zarya chemical plant produces explosives. So all the explosives that russians found in the plant were there from the beginning.

Secondly, if Ukraine would detonate Zarya, it would cause a technological disaster for the whole region. It would harm Ukrainians more than it would russians. And, as a nation that already had the biggest technological disaster in history happen on its soil, Ukrainians would not want to cause another one.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
